Vegans In Power

The face of veganism is changing as famous and powerful individuals join the ranks. The old idea that vegans were all long-haired hippies, nibbling their carrots and lettuce in their secluded mountain homes, no longer applies. We're now joined by popular musicians, award winning actors, competitive body-builders, and successful business moguls. Even several politicians are going vegan.

There are many reasons people choose a vegan lifestyle, status, personal morality, religion, to help the environment, and even for love. These are all great reasons to begin, but the health benefits usually become the reason people continue down this plant-based path. A vegan lifestyle cuts most fat and all cholesterol from food while supplying more antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

A typical American diet relies heavily on refined sugars, complex carbohydrates that have been stripped of their original nutrition, and animal products. Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and degenerative diseases continue to climb along with consumption of these calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods. Fiber and antioxidants may not have daily recommended amounts, but they are still very important to health and people are beginning to shift back toward rich plant foods.

Body-builders are shucking off the stigma that only competitors that consume animal products and by products will have the muscle mass to be viable challengers. Vegan musicians are popping up everywhere. They uplift us, fill us with emotion, drive our productivity, or entertain us with their music, but now they set healthy examples too. Vegan actors are also becoming more commonplace. These musicians and actors inspire us to seek healthier living without being pushy with their ideals.

Business moguls are some of the newest additions to the vegan lifestyle. Many are stepping forward, taking control of their diet, and setting a strong example for their employees, their shareholders, and the world. They prove big business doesn't have to be unhealthy, chained to the desk on one hand and fast food or extravagance on the other.

These changes to the vegan image and the buzz created by high profile people coming forward to embrace a wholesome alternative makes this an interesting time to be pursuing a healthier diet. The old stigmas are fading away and new research is being done that continually builds up the benefits of eating more plant-based foods in extending life, lowering cholesterol, fighting cardiovascular disease, and much much more.

If you're inspired by a celebrity or anyone else to be healthier, go for it! Not ready to go vegan? That's up to you, but adding more vegetables and fruits to your diet will make a huge difference. Start small, watch how you feel, and see where it takes you from there.
